For many producers, it is not merely a tree, but a main source of income, a family tradition and part of the region\u2019s rural identity. In recent years, however, olive cultivation has come under increasing pressure: drought, extreme temperatures, poorer soils, rising fertiliser costs, nutritional problems, olive fruit fly, reduced organic matter and the need for cleaner and more sustainable farming practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this context, natural zeolite is of particular interest. It is not a fertiliser in the traditional sense. It is a natural mineral soil improver that helps the soil function better: retain more water, hold onto nutrients, reduce losses through leaching and create more stable conditions around the root. Zeolites are used in agriculture because they can improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil, such as cation exchange capacity, water-holding capacity and nutrient retention. [2], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03c4\u03b9-\u03b5\u03af\u03bd\u03b1\u03b9-\u03bf-\u03b6\u03b5\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2-\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9-\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1\u03c4\u03af-\u03ad\u03c7\u03b5\u03b9-\u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1\u03c3\u03af\u03b1-\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd-\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\">What is zeolite and why is it important for olive trees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zeolite is a natural, microporous, crystalline aluminosilicate mineral. Its structure resembles a three-dimensional lattice filled with microscopic pores and channels. It can retain water and positively charged ions, such as ammonium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. In this way, it acts as a natural \u2018reservoir\u2019 of water and nutrients within the soil. [2], [6], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best-known zeolite for agricultural applications is clinoptilolite; in olive cultivation, it is used as <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.zeolife.gr\/product\/greek-zeolite-2point5-to-5mm\/?utm_source=zeolife.gr&amp;utm_medium=internal&amp;utm_campaign=content-to-shop&amp;utm_content=zeolithos-elia-intro\">2.5\u20135 millimetre gravel to be incorporated into the soil<\/a>. Its value in olive cultivation does not lie in the fact that it \u2018feeds\u2019 the olive tree directly, but in the fact that it helps the soil to make better use of fertiliser, moisture and microbial activity. Put simply, zeolite does not replace proper fertilisation, but it can make fertilisation more efficient. It retains nutrients and reduces losses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many olive groves, particularly those with sandy, sloping or poor soils, some of the fertiliser is lost through rainwater or irrigation. Nitrogen, for example, can be lost through nitrate leaching or ammonia volatilisation. Zeolite, due to its high cation exchange capacity, can retain ammonium nitrogen and other nutrients and release them more gradually. [2], [3], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly important for olive trees, as their nutrient supply should not be abrupt or excessive, but steady. Olive trees require a balanced supply of nitrogen, potassium, boron, calcium and magnesium, depending on the soil, the variety, the age of the tree, pruning, fruit set and the year\u2019s rainfall. [3], [8], [10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-\u03b2\u03b5\u03bb\u03c4\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9-\u03c4\u03b7-\u03b4\u03b9\u03b1\u03c7\u03b5\u03af\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03b7-\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5-\u03bd\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03cd\">2. Improves water management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The olive tree is drought-tolerant, but a prolonged lack of water affects flowering, fruit set, fruit size, oil content and, ultimately, yield. Zeolite can retain water in its pores and help improve the soil\u2019s water-holding capacity. [1], [2], [4], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean that zeolite \u2018waters\u2019 the tree on its own. It means that it helps the soil lose its moisture less quickly and keeps the environment around the roots more stable. [2], [4], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-\u03b2\u03b5\u03bb\u03c4\u03b9\u03ce\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9-\u03c4\u03b7-\u03b4\u03bf\u03bc\u03ae-\u03c4\u03bf\u03c5-\u03b5\u03b4\u03ac\u03c6\u03bf\u03c5\u03c2\">3. Improves soil structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In heavy, compacted soils, zeolite can help improve aeration and structure. In light, sandy soils, it can help retain water and nutrients. This is important because the olive tree requires an active root system, good aeration and consistent moisture levels, without extremes. Zeolites are referred to in the literature as soil improvers that can influence hydraulic conductivity, permeability, cation exchange capacity and the water-holding capacity of the soil. [2], [7], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-\u03c3\u03c5\u03bc\u03b2\u03ac\u03bb\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9-\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7-\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03c9\u03c3\u03b7-\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2-\u03c1\u03cd\u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03c3\u03b7\u03c2-\u03b1\u03c0\u03cc-\u03bb\u03b9\u03c0\u03ac\u03c3\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\">4. Helps reduce pollution from fertilisers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When fertilisers are not used correctly, some of them may end up in deeper soil layers or in groundwater. The use of zeolite has been studied as a means of improving fertiliser efficiency and reducing nitrogen losses. In a three-year experiment in olive groves in Italy, the application of zeolite material enabled a reduction in nitrogen fertiliser application of up to 50 per cent, without any adverse effect on nitrogen uptake by the leaves. [3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the grower, this translates into potential savings on fertiliser, better use of inputs and a more environmentally friendly practice. [2], [3], [11]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03c4\u03b9-\u03b4\u03b5\u03af\u03c7\u03bd\u03bf\u03c5\u03bd-\u03bf\u03b9-\u03bc\u03b5\u03bb\u03ad\u03c4\u03b5\u03c2-\u03b5\u03b9\u03b4\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac-\u03b3\u03b9\u03b1-\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd-\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\">What do studies specifically show regarding the olive tree?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of zeolite in olive cultivation is not based solely on empirical observation. There are now several scientific studies examining its effect on growth, nutrition, soil moisture, olive oil quality and the sustainability of olive groves. [3], [4], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a study of organic olive groves, the addition of zeolite was associated with increased nitrogen levels in the soil and higher potassium levels in both the soil and the trees, indicating an improvement in nutrient status. [8]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a five-year monitoring study of olive trees, the addition of volcanic zeolite tuff had a positive effect on shoot length, plant weight, number of branches, number of leaves, trunk diameter and leaf water status compared with the control. [9]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ZeOliva research programme, the use of zeolite material on young olive trees enabled a 50 per cent reduction in nitrogen fertilisation, whilst maintaining similar nitrogen levels in the leaves and without any adverse effect on key growth parameters. The researchers attribute this result to better nitrogen retention in the soil and its more efficient utilisation by the trees. [3]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In arid olive groves, the combination of natural zeolite with leguminous ground cover improved photosynthetic activity, the nutritional status of the trees, soil moisture and yield, whilst enhancing soil health indicators such as organic and microbial activity and cation exchange capacity. [4]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recent research from 2024 showed that the application of natural zeolite tuff improved soil quality indicators 6 to 10 years after a single application, in various agricultural systems, including organic perennial olive groves. [7]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03b6\u03b5\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2-\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9-\u03c0\u03bf\u03b9\u03cc\u03c4\u03b7\u03c4\u03b1-\u03b5\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03bf\u03bb\u03ac\u03b4\u03bf\u03c5\">Zeolite and olive oil quality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality of olive oil is influenced by many factors: variety, soil, humidity, temperature, nutrition, degree of ripeness, olive fruit fly infestation, harvest time and method of pressing. Zeolite is not a \u2018magic solution\u2019 that transforms the oil on its own. However, it can form part of a more comprehensive system for better olive grove management. [6], [10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies on olives have shown that zeolite applications can influence the nutritional status, fatty acid composition and certain other quality characteristics. In a 2023 study on the Gemlik and Manzanillo varieties, doses of 0, 500, 1000, 2,000 and 3,000 g per tree, with the 3,000 g per tree dose proving to be the most effective among the applications for the specific characteristics studied. [10]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, in a study of foliar applications using zeolite particle films, the oils from plants that had received natural zeolite exhibited higher phenolic content values compared with the other treatments, without any adverse effects on plant physiology being recorded. [6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03b6\u03b5\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2-\u03ba\u03b1\u03b9-\u03b4\u03ac\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2-\u03c4\u03b9-\u03c0\u03c1\u03ad\u03c0\u03b5\u03b9-\u03bd\u03b1-\u03b3\u03bd\u03c9\u03c1\u03af\u03b6\u03b5\u03b9-\u03bf-\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03b3\u03c9\u03b3\u03cc\u03c2\">Zeolite and the olive fruit fly: what growers need to know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The olive fruit fly is one of the most serious pests affecting olive cultivation, as it affects not only the quantity of the fruit but also the quality of the olive oil. Damage to the fruit can lead to a deterioration in acidity, oxidative parameters and organoleptic characteristics. [6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, foliar applications of natural minerals, such as kaolin and zeolite, have been studied; these create a thin particulate film on the foliage and fruit. This film may influence the insect\u2019s infestation and egg-laying behaviour. In a 2024 study, Greek natural zeolite rich in clinoptilolite demonstrated a strong deterrent effect on olive fruit fly egg-laying under different temperature and humidity conditions, particularly when used with a suitable adhesive. [6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note: this report does not imply that every type of zeolite is an authorised plant protection product for the olive fruit fly. Growers must only apply products and use methods permitted by current legislation and should consult their agronomist. Zeolite can be incorporated as a natural tool within a broader strategy of monitoring, prevention and integrated management, not as an unregulated substitute for official plant protection guidelines. [5], [6]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03c0\u03ce\u03c2-\u03b5\u03c6\u03b1\u03c1\u03bc\u03cc\u03b6\u03b5\u03c4\u03b1\u03b9-\u03bf-\u03b6\u03b5\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2-\u03c3\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd-\u03b5\u03bb\u03b9\u03ac\">How zeolite is applied to olive trees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03b5\u03bd\u03c3\u03c9\u03bc\u03ac\u03c4\u03c9\u03c3\u03b7-\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf-\u03ad\u03b4\u03b1\u03c6\u03bf\u03c2\">Incorporation into the soil<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic and most long-term application is the incorporation of natural zeolite into the soil. It is applied to the root zone, not just directly against the trunk. Ideally, the zeolite is placed around the perimeter beneath the tree\u2019s canopy, where the active absorption roots are located. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For olive trees, the recommended application is 8 kg of zeolite per tree for 3 consecutive years, with a particle size of 2.5 to 5 mm. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General application procedure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare the area around the olive tree up to the tree\u2019s canopy <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spread the zeolite evenly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work it lightly into the soil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If possible, water the area afterwards or apply before rain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can be combined with organic matter, active microorganisms, filamentous fungi, mycorrhizae, compost, well-rotted manure or mulch, where these are suitable for the field. [1], [2], [4]<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best time is usually from autumn to early spring, so that the material can begin to interact with the soil moisture before the dry season. In irrigated olive groves, it can also be applied at other times of year, provided that incorporation and moisture are available. [1]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-\u03c3\u03b5-\u03bd\u03ad\u03b5\u03c2-\u03c6\u03c5\u03c4\u03b5\u03cd\u03c3\u03b5\u03b9\u03c2\">In new plantings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For new olive trees, zeolite can be incorporated from the outset into the planting hole or the root zone. This helps to create a more favourable microenvironment for the root system. Particularly in poor, sandy, stony or arid fields, applying it at the time of planting makes the most sense, as the material remains in the soil for many years.  The method of application is simple: it is mixed thoroughly with the soil used to cover the planting hole. One to two kilograms per hole is sufficient. The active roots are mainly found further out, within the canopy\u2019s projection. For this reason, the application should cover a larger diameter, depending on the size of the tree.
