{"id":19054,"date":"2019-08-18T21:18:39","date_gmt":"2019-08-18T18:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zeolife.gr\/zeolite-for-broiler-chickens-in-ioannina-video\/"},"modified":"2019-08-18T21:18:39","modified_gmt":"2019-08-18T18:18:39","slug":"zeolite-for-broiler-chickens-in-ioannina-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zeolife.gr\/en\/zeolite-for-broiler-chickens-in-ioannina-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Zeolite for broiler chickens in Ioannina [Video]"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, we visited a poultry farm in Ioannina where zeolite is used for rearing broiler chickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main problem in this type of farming is the high level of gas produced by the animals\u2019 digestion. This creates an adverse and uncontrollable environment in the living space and, by extension, leads to diseases that can prove fatal to production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is zeolite used in poultry farming?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Zeolite is used in poultry farming in two ways. It begins with the addition of zeolite to the animals\u2019 feed, at a rate of 2 per cent. This is complemented by adding 100 grams per square metre to the living area. The two methods work in tandem, and the benefits are manifold. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"920\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zSch0G4zjg8\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does zeolite \u2018work\u2019 in livestock farming?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zeolite as a feed additive for animals.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a significant number of studies and theses on the use of natural zeolite, and specifically clinoptilolite, in animal husbandry. A large proportion of these studies relate specifically to poultry farming. Why is this? Quite simply, because in poultry farming, disease problems are much more acute than in other sectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first report on the effects of natural zeolites on animal production (livestock farming) was presented by Mumpton and Fishman in 1984. In the 1980s, more than 60 articles were published concerning the application of zeolites in poultry farming.  In 1989, Evans examined in detail and depth almost all the articles concerning the addition of zeolites to poultry farming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduced mortality, increased body weight and a contribution to growth.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, the main use of zeolite in poultry farming begins with its addition to the animals\u2019 feed. This can be introduced immediately after hatching. Once zeolite enters the digestive system, it begins to benefit the organism in various ways.  It begins to bind the ammonia produced during the digestion of food, whilst releasing potassium, which regulates stomach acidity. This facilitates the absorption of minerals and nutrients by the body. At the same time, it binds and removes toxins and allergens from food via the digestive tract. It thus reduces mortality among young animals and contributes to their growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2006, in the postgraduate thesis by Apostolia Klisiarchi of the School of Agriculture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the addition of natural zeolite and a mycotoxin-adsorbing formulation to the feed was studied in relation to the performance and carcass characteristics of meat-producing poultry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the study, the dietary supplementation of broiler chicken feed with zeolite significantly increased final body weight and growth rate. It also had a positive effect on carcass colour and the fracture resistance of the femur. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutritional utilisation and feed conversion.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most notable benefit attributed to zeolite and its inclusion in animal feed is its beneficial effect on feed utilisation, both in laying hens as well as in broiler chickens. This has been recognised since 1997, in a study by Oliver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, according to a thesis by Petutkin from 1991, the effects of zeolites on feed utilisation could be attributed to a reduction in the rate of feed transit through the gastrointestinal tract, the inactivation of enzymes and their effect on the intestinal flora. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use at high ambient temperatures and mitigation of heat stress.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 1992 study by Roussel suggests that zeolite can reduce respiratory rate in response to high temperatures, enabling birds to perform better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Ingram (1998), birds subjected to heat stress benefited from the addition of zeolite to their feed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bone quality characteristics.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a 1990 thesis, researcher Leach reports that the dietary addition of zeolite contributed to a significant increase in the ash content of bones, thereby improving their strength. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduced water consumption.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the many studies being carried out on the effects of zeolites across the entire spectrum of poultry performance, there have also been attempts to determine whether zeolite has an effect on water intake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1996, Onagi, as reported by Mumpton and Fishman, demonstrated that water consumption, as well as the moisture content of faeces, decreased when zeolite was added to the diet of broiler chickens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zeolite in animal housing. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zeolite helps to control odours, particularly ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, in livestock and poultry farms as well as in fish farming facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1996, there have been reports that Japanese farmers were the first to use zeolite in the outdoor areas of poultry houses, in manure heaps and liquid waste to tackle damp and odours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scientific basis for such applications was initially examined and confirmed by Hayburst and Willard in 1989. Oliver, in 1997, reported that the consumption of zeolite with feed contributes to the production of a smaller quantity of droppings with a lower moisture content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to note that adding zeolite to animal manure aids its decomposition and ultimately produces an excellent fertiliser. The entire amount of zeolite added to the animals\u2019 feed ends up in the final product and subsequently returns to nature, from whence it came. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read
