Most of this quantity was destined for the US market, raising serious suspicions that the oil exported from Italy is of very poor quality.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extra virgin olive oil is, in theory, the finest and purest quality of oil that can be produced. To obtain the coveted label and use it on the market, one must certify that the oil is produced without solvents and in a controlled environment so that it is not affected by significant temperature fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the usual method of adulterating this oil involves mixing it with sunflower oil or other types of vegetable oils which do not have a strong flavour and do not significantly alter the character of the olive oil.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Italian police estimate that the fake extra virgin olive oil scam could be worth as much as 16 billion euros a year. The Italians take the quality of their exported products very seriously, having even set up a special police unit dedicated to inspecting all goods exported abroad.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mafia could not be left out of this affair, as a large part of this scheme is under its control. Indeed, those with a good understanding of the situation in Italy claim that the profits may be greater than those from the drug trade, and without the high risks associated with the latter.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth noting that, according to the American report, it costs around 13 euros to produce one litre of high-quality extra virgin olive oil, whilst the substandard oil sold on the market can be produced at a cost of less than two euros per litre.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mafia, however, controls a large part of Italy\u2019s agricultural production, particularly in the south, as it is only through its own \u2018organisation\u2019 that the workers to be employed in the fields (usually migrants), whilst forcing farmers to use its own facilities for the production and standardisation of their products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As experts argue, counterfeit olive oil is not merely a legal and ethical problem for the market. It also poses a health risk to consumers, as no one knows what kind of adulterants are used to create the final product.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health problems can be long-term but, in some cases, immediate, such as, for example, the fact that they can lead to severe allergic reactions in those who are sensitive to certain seeds from which oil has been produced and used as a blending component in\u2026 extra virgin olive oil.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a
