Zeolites and humankind \u2013 N. Lygeros, G. Hatzigeorgiou<\/h1>\n

Natural zeolites are formed when volcanic rocks and layers of ash react with alkaline groundwater. They are microporous, clay-silicate minerals which are commonly used as commercial adsorbents. Natural zeolites can even be used in cases of water and soil contamination following a nuclear accident. Notably, clinoptilolite was used in 1986, by the Russian government to absorb radioactive chemicals and other harmful toxins following the Chernobyl disaster. People showed a 30 per cent reduction in radioactive isotopes following the first application of zeolite. In Great Britain, it is used to remove caesium-137 and strontium-90 from radioactive waste. In a pilot study, the filtration of 3 m\u00b3 of contaminated groundwater in western Thessaloniki was investigated \u2013 the removal of arsenic and fluoride proved highly effective. Other applications directly related to human activity are as follows.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 As buffering agents to reduce the acidity of stomach contents.
\n\u2022 For the treatment of stomach ulcers.
\n\u2022 To accelerate wound healing.
\n\u2022 Binds mycotoxins to form stable complexes.
\n\u2022 Increases antioxidant levels in the body.
\n\u2022 Binds to free radicals in the body.
\n\u2022 Helps to alkalise the pH.
\n\u2022 Relieves muscle pain caused by lactic acid.
\n\u2022 Reduces fungal infections of the feet.
\n\u2022 Neutralises the effects of hepatitis viruses.
\n\u2022 Stabilises and regulates the immune system.
\n\u2022 Reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
\n\u2022 In the manufacture of anti-diarrhoeal medicinal products.
\n\u2022 In the manufacture of preparations for lowering cholesterol levels.
\n\u2022 As carriers for the sustained release of pharmaceutical substances.
\n\u2022 As materials for the binding and removal of ammonium ions in haemodialysis machines.
\n\u2022 As filters in anaesthetic machines.
\n\u2022 In dentistry, they are used in the production of filling materials and as polishing agents in fluoride toothpastes.<\/p>\n

Fish farming:<\/h2>\n

\u2022 It filters the water and absorbs ammonia.
\n\u2022 For the removal of heavy metals.
\n\u2022 To increase oxygen levels in aerated fish farm waters and in tanks used for transporting live fish.<\/p>\n
