An attempt is made to link the combustion of fossil fuels (lignite) with the requirements for sustainable energy production in Greece, proposing economical, feasible and environmentally friendly methods to minimise the CO\u2082 problem using innovative techniques for the separation, carbon capture and storage (CCS) of this greenhouse gas. CCS represents an intermediate step towards low-carbon energy production. Cost-effective and efficient CCS methods can be achieved through new physicochemical approaches that enhance adsorption-driven carbon dioxide capture in zeolite pores or in depleted lignite matrices, potentially by utilising existing natural Greek deposits. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><a name='more'><\/a><br \/>The large-scale application of a recently developed method\u2014NaKA zeolite, which offers high CO\u2082-over-N\u2082 selectivity and adsorption capacity\u2014is examined. \u00a9 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
