Final decision on Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros
The final decision on the exploration licence for Greek zeolite marks the beginning of a new and revolutionary phase for our country, as, for the first time in history, zeolite is becoming a reality. The approval of the study entitled ‘Restoration of the area surrounding the zeolite exploration site in the Petrota Municipal District’ marks the starting point for Greece. Our struggle has thus been vindicated, as our vision is set to become a reality. Even before the survey began, measures were approved for soil restoration, protection against surface erosion and the regulation of the water regime. For this reason, it is proposed to introduce oak saplings into the restoration area through artificial reforestation. More specifically, it is proposed to plant a total of 1,980 oak saplings, to construct irrigation basins, to irrigate the plants and to fertilise them. The restoration of the area will also include maintenance, namely the watering and fertilisation of the saplings for a period of two years following planting. It is very important to realise that, should the artificial reforestation fail, Greece will require Olympus S.A. to undertake replanting. This assurance is fundamental to the whole process because the entire campaign for zeolite was and is being waged for the sake of our people and the environment, and not to lay waste to everything. zeolite, after all, is one of the building blocks of Greece’s future.
