zeolite and cosmetology – aesthetics – N. Lygeros [text]

One of the areas of application for zeolite that allows for vertical production as well as added value is that of cosmetology and aesthetics. We are already aware of many applications that exploit the molecular sieve property of zeolite, and in particular clinoptilolite. We should therefore not limit ourselves to these applications, especially when they can maximise its utilisation. Clinoptilolite’s ability to act at a molecular level allows us to consider applications – and indeed patents – through chemistry, without, however, suffering the consequences associated with synthetic materials.

With natural zeolite, we can remain within the realm of natural products rather than limiting ourselves to mere marketing. Natural zeolite
, and clinoptilolite
in particular, can also make a contribution in this sector, which affects so many people. Consequently, we must bear this in mind when considering its utilisation.

The zeolite-catalysed alkoxylation of limonene and alpha-pinene over acid-treated mordenite, clinoptilolite and ferrierite as catalysts has already been reported in the literature. The best results were obtained for the methoxylation of limonene in the presence of a clinoptilolite-type zeolite (60 per cent yield). The alkoxylation of alpha-pinene with methanol in the presence of mordenite also achieved the highest yields of 66 per cent for 1-methyl-4-[alpha-methoxy-isopropyl]-1-cyclohexene. Syntheses of 1-methyl-4-[alpha-alkoxy-isopropyl]-1-cyclohexenes via zeolite-catalysed alkoxylation of other terpenes were reported in a review paper.
