Zeolite Institute – Nikos Lygeros

Given the current situation in Greece, it is essential that we consider the structure and infrastructure of a zeolite Institute, which will capitalise on the innovations offered by zeolite in various sectors. It is not enough simply to begin utilising zeolite; we must think strategically and rationally about the added value that its use enables. The Zeolite Institute must provide knowledge, which can be delivered in a manner appropriate to the level, in the form of seminars and masterclasses. Within this framework, where theory comes first, we can then move on to the practical aspect with experiments that are either research-based or educational, so that there is also feedback through interactivity. Furthermore, the laboratory can be complemented by gardens, where experiments can be carried out on a real-world scale. In this way, we can study in depth the organoleptic properties of the products produced using zeolite. The same can be done in the industrial sector, and a mechanical engineering laboratory with standard equipment is sufficient to demonstrate many of the applications of zeolite as a filter and catalytic agent. An engineering laboratory would enable the use of zeolite in the construction sector to be demonstrated. It is also important to have a laboratory capable of producing products through chemistry and biology for human use in the cosmetics sector, as well as in medicine within the context of detoxification. The general idea is that zeolites can serve as a platform for applications that can be transformed into innovations through a form of intelligence that does not rely on others to create. Access to Greek zeolite offers a potential that we must harness not only in theory but also in practice to provide our country with a framework of resilience based on our mineral wealth, but also on its processing, because it is this distinction that will make the difference in terms of recovery – and not merely growth, which cannot bring about the paradigm shift our people need.
