The Use of Zeolites in Agriculture – Frederick A. Mumpton

Frederick A. Mumpton, Department of Earth Sciences, State University College, Brockport, NY 14420 Introduction As agriculturalists around the world step up their efforts to expand crop and livestock production, increasing attention is being paid to various mineral materials as soil amendments and as dietary supplements in animal husbandry. The close relationship between the agricultural and geological sciences is not new—crop production depends on the existence and maintenance of fertile soil, and agronomists rely on knowledge of the mineralogy and geochemistry of clays and other soil constituents. In animal sciences, the addition of crushed limestone to chicken feed to strengthen eggshells ... Read more

Zeolado (zeolite olive oil) 2015 – N. Lygeros

This year saw the third olive harvest for the production of extra virgin green olive oil from olives protected exclusively by zeolite as part of organic farming. The first observation we can make is that, of course, there was no sign of the olive fruit fly. The second is that production is higher than in the previous two years, and the explanation is that the zeolite has now been in use for three years and is working with absolute efficiency. The third point, of course, is that quality has improved and acidity has fallen even further; indeed, preliminary measurements already ... Read more

Genetic structure and differentiation of natural populations of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae

Agricultural University of Athens, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology Genetics Section, Genetics Laboratory Master’s Thesis: Genetic Structure and Differentiation of Natural Populations of the Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera oleae. Postgraduate Programme in ‘Biotechnology and Applications in Agriculture’ Vasiliki Androutsopoulou, Athens, November 2011 Abstract In the present study, natural populations of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, using the starch gel electrophoresis method, with the aim of detecting polymorphism in four enzymes, encoded by four corresponding genes, which are of particular significance and interest for the genetics, morphology and physiology of the olive fruit fly. The results of the study could prove ... Read more

Germline transformation of the olive fly Bactrocera oleae using a versatile transgenesis marker

M. Koukidou1*†, A. Klinakis1*†‡, C. Reboulakis§, L. Zagoraiou*†¶, N. Tavernarakis*, I. Livadaras*, A. Economopoulos§ and C. Savakis*† *Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation for Research and Technology, Heraklion, Crete, Greece; †Medical School and §Department of Biology, University of Crete, Heraklion, Greece Abstract The olive fruit fly (olive fly) Bactrocera oleae (Dacus), recently introduced in North America, is the most destructive pest of olives worldwide. The lack of an efficient gene transfer technology for olive fly has hampered molecular analysis, as well as development of genetic techniques for its control. We have developed a Minos-based transposon vector carrying a self- ... Read more

Solubility of apatite in clay and zeolite-bearing systems: Application to agriculture

Ward Chesworth, Peter Van Straaten, Peter Smith, Steven Sadura Department of Land Resource Science, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ont. N1G 2W1 Canada Accepted 11 February 1987, Available online 1 April 2003 Abstract The various forms of apatite release Ca+2 and P-bearing anions into solution. The generally low solubility of these phases, however, has been a drawback to the use of apatite as a direct source of nutrient P in agriculture. Apatite has for the most part been used as a raw material for the production of the more soluble phases used in conventional fertilizers. This necessitates industrial processing by such techniques ... Read more

Evaluation of Zeolite Beads Technology for Drying Vegetable Seeds to a Low Moisture Content prior to Long-term Storage in Nepal

Khanal Arjun(1) Paudel Pratima(2) 1 Project Coordinator/Research Associate at Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) (E-mail: arjunkhanal15@gmail.com) 2 Data entry officer at Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) (E-mail: Paudelpratima10@yahoo.com) Abstract Seed drying beads are modified ceramic materials (aluminum silicates or “zeolites”) that specifically absorb and hold water molecules very tightly in their microscopic pores. The beads will continue to absorb water until all of their pores are filled, up to 20 to 25% of their initial weight. Seven experiments were carried out using zeolite seed Drying Beads® to dry ... Skouries project halted by ministerial decision – N. Lygeros

The Minister for Productive Reconstruction, the Environment and Energy has turned a vision into reality. By means of an official decision, the approvals for the technical studies have been revoked following a breach of the terms by the company Hellas Gold. In practical terms, this amounts to a suspension of works, and that in itself is already an achievement. We are not even going to analyse the issue in the context of the upcoming elections. It does not concern us at all, in the sense that the priority is to halt the destruction of nature and the lives of our ... Read more

Incorporating zeolite into rose bushes. Rhodes, 2015

zeolite is a mineral which, due to its structure at the molecular level, binds heavy metals, toxins and free radicals; it can therefore be used in human health for detoxification, in livestock farming as a dietary supplement, and in agriculture to conserve water and fertilisers and to avoid the use of harsh pesticides, whilst at the same time increasing yields with improved quality in terms of flavour, aroma and colour. It can also be applied on a smaller scale, such as in pots and gardens. The recommended ratio for use in pots is 1 kg of zeolite per 10 kg ... Read more

Experimental Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros

Experimental Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros Thanks to the zeolite exploration licence held by Giorgos Georgiadis in the Kokkalo area, we now have Greek zeolite in our hands for the first time, enabling us to carry out experiments and select applications. At present, of course, there are only a few kilograms available until the licence to mine Greek zeolite is granted, but it marks a symbolic beginning that proves the vision has become a reality, and now no one can dispute its existence, however slow on the uptake they may be. As we require material for experiments relating to Greek ... Read more
