The use of Brazilian sedimentary zeolite in agriculture
Brazilian sedimentary zeolite use in agriculture This report describes the characterization and application of the Brazilian zeolitic sedimentary rocks as a slow plant-nutrient fertilizer and soil conditioner. The characterization of the head samples showed that it is composed of the zeolite stilbite intertwined with a smectic clay mineral, mixed with quartz. A lowcost quartz separation gravitational technique was used to concentrate the mineral. An enrichment of concentrated natural zeolite was carried out by adding KNO3, K2HPO4 and H3PO4 + apatite. These materials were tested with Rangpur lime rootstock and other with four successive crops grown on the same substrate: lettuce, ... Read more
Zeolite developments – N. Lygeros
N. Lygeros We are seeing developments in the use of zeolite throughout Greece and Cyprus. We realise, however, that its ability to combat the olive fruit fly effectively is not yet widely known, and areas at high risk of infestation due to the ripening of the olives must be informed in good time, so as not to suffer the devastation of previous years. For when there is a solution to a problem plaguing olive growers, it is essential that it is not implemented by the relevant authorities. Central decisions are always delayed because they assume that Greece is a single ... Read more
zeolite and bees – N. Lygeros
Whilst we know that bees are a very important indicator of environmental trends when pollution is present, we do not systematically examine the quality of honey and pollen. Research is now beginning to show that the impact of pesticides has significant consequences for the quality of bees’ produce. We must, therefore, realise that this phenomenon is to be expected, since bees do not forage in areas where there is specific protection for trees and plants. Consequently, it is only natural that they carry toxic substances back into their hives. We must, therefore – as is only right, not only for ... Read more
