Zeolite developments – N. Lygeros
N. Lygeros We are seeing developments in the use of zeolite
throughout Greece and Cyprus. We realise, however, that its ability to combat the olive fruit fly effectively is not yet widely known, and areas at high risk of infestation due to the ripening of the olives must be informed in good time, so as not to suffer the devastation of previous years. For when there is a solution to a problem plaguing olive growers, it is essential that it is not implemented by the relevant authorities. Central decisions are always delayed because they assume that Greece is a single entity in meteorological terms; must realise the cost this will entail when olive oil producers realise that they have failed to promote an effective economic solution.
Furthermore, as Greece produces some of the world’s finest olive oils, which are widely recognised, it cannot passively accept the destruction of its raw material. Moreover, if we take into account the added value afforded by the use of zeolite, as the process enables the production not only of extra virgin olive oil but also of zeolite oil that meets ultra-premium specifications. We will then even be able to introduce the ‘Zeo Ultra Premium’ category, which will guarantee a level of quality that did not previously exist, as the olive will, of course, be protected from the olive fruit fly, but will also have been purified of contaminants such as heavy metals, toxins and free radicals. It is therefore of the utmost importance that each of us endeavours to help the olive growers we know, by letting them know that there is a high-quality solution to a difficult problem that has nationwide implications, given that our olive oil has represented us in a timeless way since ancient times.
