From the extraction of zeolite to the development of Thrace – N. Lygeros

With the start of Greek zeolite mining in the Kokkalo area near Petrota, Thrace is ushering in a new era of development. It is certainly not the exploitation of just three deposits that will change the whole picture, but this innovation has a future. For at the outset, no one believed the project was feasible, and a great deal of effort was expended to secure recognition of the value of Greek zeolite. Now, however, it is a reality that we will be watching and following closely.

For Thrace, the important thing is for others to follow the example set by Giorgos Georgiadis, so that the need to establish a zeolite plant in Thrace itself arises even sooner. Of course, this cannot happen immediately, as for the time being the zeolite will be processed at a plant in Thessaloniki. However, now that the first practical step has been taken, it is important for us all to realise the value of production in Thrace, given that this region is home to Greece’s largest deposits.
