New steps ahead for Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros

Translated from the Greek by Athina Kehagias

Within the context of the research licence for zeolite in Northern Evros, and more specifically in the Kokkala area near Petrota, we also had to address the issue of road construction, which is necessary to access the zeolite ore. This problem has now been resolved following a decision by the Secretary of Decentralised Administration for Macedonia-Thrace, as approval was granted for a Type C forest road for industrial mineral surveys of ore deposits, specifically zeolite.
The total length of the road will be 1,440 metres, with a width of 4 metres, whilst the gradients will not exceed 12 per cent.  The project specifications provide for excavations in earth and semi-rocky ground, as well as the construction of embankment fill. This new development is highly significant, as it enables us to discuss the merits of Greek zeolite in greater detail, no longer merely as a vision, but as an actual reality – a Greek reality. We are now awaiting approval of the landscaping design survey for the rehabilitation of the quarry site. This is a standard procedure applicable to all quarries; however, in this case, matters are much simpler, as zeolite acts as a soil-improving agent for agriculture. Consequently, we are beginning to see the practical realisation of our country’s long-standing efforts to utilise zeolite – a development that cannot leave anyone indifferent and which strengthens all those who have fought for years to ensure that a strategic vision for Greece’s future becomes a reality.
