Preparation of Compound Clinoptilolite Filter Material and Performance of Ammonia Nitrogen Removal

Abstract

This experiment utilised natural clinoptilolite powder as the main material to prepare a spherical compound filter material with a large specific surface area and high porosity by adding an adhesive and a pore-forming agent, amongst other things. This compound filter material has a favourable effect when treating domestic wastewater. The static adsorption test showed that the adsorption rate of ammonia nitrogen was 58.5 per cent when the dosage of the compound filter material was 100 g/L, the NH₄⁺-N concentration was 100 mg/L and the contact time was 40 minutes. The fit of the adsorption isotherm for NH₄⁺-N on the composite filter material was well described by the Langmuir equation, with an R² (coefficient of determination) of 0.99216. During the steady-state operation phase, when the average concentration of influent NH₃-N was 35 mg/L, the average removal rate and concentration of effluent NH₄⁺-N reached 83.51 per cent and 5.81 mg/L respectively, which met the first-class national wastewater discharge standard (GB 8978-1996).
