Press release from Kyttaros Ierissos, 9 October 2014
On Tuesday 30 September, a lecture was held in the hall of the Aristotelian Cultural Centre in Ierissos, a lecture was held in the auditorium of the Aristotelian Cultural Centre in Ierissos, featuring strategic consultant Dr Nikos Lygeros as the speaker, on the topic: ‘Human Development Strategy’, organised under the auspices of the ‘Kyttaros’ group of the Ierissos cultural association ‘Kleigenis’.
The packed hall and the attentiveness of those present highlighted not only the speaker’s expertise but also the concern of the residents of the Municipality of Aristotelis for the life and future of their community. ‘When you find yourself in a region that forms the crossroads between Hellenism and Christianity through Aristotle and Mount Athos, you do not even have the right to let it be destroyed, because it is part of Greece’s cultural heritage…’ says Nikos Lygeros, and, feeling the weight of this responsibility, all of us are fighting against the monoculture of gold mining. ‘Do not let the present convince you that you have no future, by choosing solutions with irreversible consequences. The difficulty of a struggle lies in the worth of the people who are fighting it’ was one of his remarks that filled us with hope.
With the support of such gifted individuals as Mr Lygeros, we are confident that, through ‘a people-centred development strategy that offers prospects not only to the residents of Ierissos but to the entire region’ we will succeed in giving our community the future it deserves.
