A new step for Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros

As part of the exploration licence for zeolite in Northern Evros, and more specifically in the Kokkalo area, which is located near Petrota, there was also the issue of road construction, which is essential for access to the zeolite deposit. This problem has now also been resolved following the decision by the Secretary-General of the Decentralised Administration of Macedonia and Thrace, following the approval of the design for a Type C forest road for mineral exploration of industrial minerals, namely zeolite. The total length of the road construction project will be 1,440 metres, with a width of 4 metres, whilst the gradients will not exceed 12 per cent. The project involves excavations in earthy and semi-rocky ground, as well as the construction of embankments. This new step is very practical, as it now allows us to discuss Greek zeolite in substantive terms, no longer merely as a vision, but as a reality – a Greek reality. All that remains now is the approval of the landscaping study for the restoration of the deposit. This is a standard procedure followed for all quarries; it is simply that things are much simpler here, as zeolite acts as a soil improver for agriculture. Consequently, we are now witnessing the practical realisation of our country’s campaign to utilise zeolite – a cause that cannot leave anyone indifferent and bolsters all those who have been fighting for so many years to make a strategic vision for the Greece of the future a reality.
