Zeolado (zeolite olive oil) 2015 – N. Lygeros
This year saw the third olive harvest for the production of extra virgin green olive oil from olives protected exclusively by zeolite as part of organic farming. The first observation we can make is that, of course, there was no sign of the olive fruit fly. The second is that production is higher than in the previous two years, and the explanation is that the zeolite has now been in use for three years and is working with absolute efficiency. The third point, of course, is that quality has improved and acidity has fallen even further; indeed, preliminary measurements already ... Read more

A detailed time-series EMT-type zeolite crystallization study in the model hydrogel system was performed to elucidate the topological and temporal aspects of zeolite nucleation. A comprehensive set of analytical tools and methods was employed to analyze ... Read more
Science breaks new ground in converting coal ash from a pollutant into useful products
South Africa has large coal reserves. It mainly burns coal to produce electricity at 13 existing coal-burning power plants, situated mainly in Mpumalanga, a province in the country’s east. In South Africa, coal power generation results in at least 36 million tonnes of solid waste residue called fly ash being produced annually. That’s the equivalent of six dumps each the size of the Pyramid of Giza. Fly ash is a problem anywhere in the world where coal is burnt, but it is particularly so in South Africa because its low-grade coal has up to 40% inorganic residue that turns into ash on combustion. Fly ash is ... Read more
The potential application of natural zeolite in greywater treatment
The potential application of natural zeolite for greywater treatment Nurul Widiastutia*, Hongwei Wua,b, Ming Angb, Dong-ke Zhanga aCentre for Fuels and Energy and bDepartment of Chemical Engineering, Curtin University of Technology, GPO Box U1987, WA 6845, Australia Tel. +61 (8) 9266 1139; Fax +61 (8) 9266 1138; email: widiasn@optusnet.com.au Abstract Natural zeolites are promising materials for water and wastewater treatment. This is due to their low cost and their ion-exchange and adsorption capabilities. They can also be modified and regenerated. This paper therefore examines efforts made to explore the potential application of natural zeolites and modified natural zeolites in water ... Read more
Natural zeolites in the water treatment process
Natural zeolites in the water treatment process D. BARLOKOVÁ ABSTRACT In many cases, it is necessary to treat water intended for human consumption in order to meet the requirements set out in Regulation No. 354/2006 of the Government of the Slovak Republic, which defines the requirements for water intended for human consumption and monitors the quality of drinking water. When seeking suitable water treatment technologies, the focus is on developing new, more efficient and cost-effective technologies and materials. The aim of this study was to compare the removal of dissolved iron and manganese from water using the natural zeolite – ... Read more
Synthesis of Na-A zeolites from natural and thermally activated Egyptian kaolinite: characterisation and competitive adsorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions (Synthesis of Na-A zeolites from natural and thermally activated Egyptian kaolinite: characterisation and competitive adsorption of copper ions from aqueous solutions)

ZN (a), ZH (b) and ZF (c). ZN is characterized by the presence of prismatic crystals of phillipsite-K (3a). (ZH) shows particles with irregular morphology associated with well-developed crystals (3b). (ZF) shows well developed cubic crystals with sharp edges and smooth surfaces (3c) Abstract In this study, we prepared hydrated and dehydrated Na-zeolites under different conditions using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and Egyptian kaolin. The synthetic zeolites were characterized by XRD, SEM, specific ... Read more

Clays as dietary supplements for pigs: A review
Mohana Devi Subramaniam and In Ho Kim Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology20156:38 DOI: 10.1186/s40104-015-0037-9 © Subramaniam and Kim. 2015 Abstract Clays are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate molecules composed of alkali and alkaline earth cations along with small amounts of various other elements. The best-known are montmorillonite, smectite, illite, kaolinite, biotite and clinoptilolite. The molecules in these clays are arranged in three-dimensional structures creating internal voids and channels capable of trapping a wide variety of molecules. As a result of this structure, clay minerals are regarded as a simple and effective tool for the prevention of the negative effects of many toxic compounds. Dietary supplementation with clays has been shown ... Read more
Zeolite: “the magic stone”? Mainly nutritional, environmental, experimental and clinical fields of application
Carmen Laurino and Beniamino Palmieri University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena (Italy). Abstract Introduction: zeolites (clinoptilolites) are a family of alluminosilicates and cations clustered to form macro aggregates by small individual cavities. In the medical area they are involved in detoxification mechanisms capturing ions and molecules into their holes. Actually, we classify about 140 types of natural and 150 synthetic zeolites, for specific and selective use. Clinoptilolite is a natural zeolite and it is the most widespread compound in the medical market. Objective: this review analyzes the main fields of zeolite utilization. Methods: we searched Pubmed/Medline using the terms ... Read more
Approval of a proposal submission to the LIFE ZEOCOMPOST programme, Municipality of Milos
EXCERPT From the minutes of the 15th/2015 meeting of the Municipal Council. Item 2: Approval of the submission of a proposal to the LIFE+ Programme The Chair, introducing the second item on the agenda, gave the floor to the Mayor, Mr Gerasimos Damoulakis. The Mayor said: The European Commission has published the call for proposals for 2015 under the LIFE Programme to fund climate and environmental action projects. At a previous meeting of the Municipal Council, we decided that our municipality should submit a proposal for the project ‘Integrated management of plastic waste in island and coastal areas’. By participating ... Read more

Savakis*† *Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation for Research and Technology, Heraklion, Crete, Greece; †Medical School and §Department of Biology, University of Crete, Heraklion, Greece Abstract The olive fruit fly (olive fly) Bactrocera oleae (Dacus), recently introduced in North America, is the most destructive pest of olives worldwide. The lack of an efficient gene transfer technology for olive fly has hampered molecular analysis, as well as development of genetic techniques for its control. We have developed a Minos-based transposon vector carrying a self- ... Read more
