From olive oil to zeolado (zeolite olive oil) – Nikos Lygeros

‘From olive oil to zeolado (zeolite olive oil)’ was the title of Nikos Lygeros’s talk in Filiatra on Thursday evening at the Vorreio Cultural Centre, where the distinguished Greek professor spoke about the properties and multiple uses of zeolite, which is found in abundance in Greece. Focusing his talk mainly on its applications in agriculture, he highlighted the significant benefits it can bring to crop production, as when applied to the soil it reduces the need for fertilisers, retains nutrients in the upper soil layers, retains moisture and releases it gradually, whilst, where it has been used, it has shown ... Olive mill wastewater treatment using a simple, low-cost zeolite-based method

Olive mill wastewater (OMW), a liquid by-product of the olive oil industry, represents a severe environmental problem owing to its high pollution load. In this study, successive columns containing different types of natural materials were investigated for their OMW treatment efficiency. Passing OMW through three columns of gravel, fine sand, and a mixture of acidified cotton and zeolite (weight:weight ratio of cotton:clinoptilolite of 2:1), followed by treatment with activated charcoal (AC) and lime, was the best treatment in terms of the quality of water obtained. This treatment decreased concentrations of −3NO, B, K, P, and total fat in OMW by ... Read more

Zeolites against the Pearl Oyster – Nikos Lygeros

This year in the Prefecture of Messinia, we are seeing a serious problem with the Margaronia. It is an insect that usually attacks young shoots as well as the fruit, affecting the point where two fruits touch more than individual fruits. On the olive tree, the insect’s larvae attack the tender tips of the shoots, unopened flowers and green fruit. It causes significant damage only to young saplings, so it is a problem for olive nurseries. In any case, what we have observed is that in areas where olive trees are infested by the olive fruit fly, those that have ... Read more

Zeolite developments – N. Lygeros

N. Lygeros We are seeing developments in the use of zeolite throughout Greece and Cyprus. We realise, however, that its ability to combat the olive fruit fly effectively is not yet widely known, and areas at high risk of infestation due to the ripening of the olives must be informed in good time, so as not to suffer the devastation of previous years. For when there is a solution to a problem plaguing olive growers, it is essential that it is not implemented by the relevant authorities. Central decisions are always delayed because they assume that Greece is a single ... Read more
