Use of a zeolite-containing biologically active food supplement in patients with burn injuries

[Article in Russian]

Abstract

The content of cationic protein in blood neutrophils, the serum activity of lysosomal enzymes, the intensity of lipid peroxidation, serum antioxidant activity and the blood concentration of trace elements were assessed in patients with burn injuries. Some patients received, in addition to their main treatment, a zeolite-containing biologically active food supplement (BAAF) ‘Lytovit’, which possesses sorption and selective ion-exchange properties. Prior to the start of treatment, all patients exhibited high levels of cationic protein degranulation, reduced neutrophil biocidal activity and increased lipid peroxidation against a background of antioxidant activity. In patients who received the zeolite-containing BAAF, the normalisation of blood concentrations of trace elements and indices of neutrophil functional activity began earlier than in patients not receiving treatment with the zeolite-containing biologically active food supplement. ‘Lytovit’ promoted an earlier regression of clinical manifestations: normalisation of body temperature, self-cleansing of wounds from purulent discharge, and a reduction in the frequency and area of graft lysis.
