Zeolite and the Region by Nikos Lygeros

The promotion of Greek zeolite is no longer a vision but a reality for the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Greek zeolite has literally been incorporated into the Region’s programme, as it is now aware of the benefits of zeolite. Many areas are already seeing tangible results in the agricultural sector following the incorporation and spraying of zeolite, and are now noticing the improved quality of their produce. The garlic from Nea Vyssa, which accounts for 70 per cent of national production, has now entered the harvesting phase. So we can all see the difference in the organoleptic properties. The garlic we tasted was nothing like the conventional variety. They are larger, free from mould, with a beautiful white base, a genuine aroma and an unrivalled flavour. We expect similar results with the asparagus too. In the meantime, the Regional Authority is taking increasingly proactive steps, in coordination with Alexandroupoli Municipality, which has applied for a research permit for the Kirkis area, which we visited to provide the initial practical data on zeolite. Combining these initiatives with the fight against the olive fruit fly to protect the olive groves should set an example for other regions regarding the applications of zeolite, because it is our future.
