Approval of a proposal submission to the LIFE ZEOCOMPOST programme, Municipality of Milos

EXCERPT

From the minutes of the 15th/2015 meeting of the Municipal Council.

Item 2: Approval of the submission of a proposal to the LIFE+ Programme

The Chair, introducing the second item on the agenda, gave the floor to the Mayor, Mr Gerasimos Damoulakis. The Mayor said: The European Commission has published the call for proposals for 2015 under the LIFE Programme to fund climate and environmental action projects. At a previous meeting of the Municipal Council, we decided that our municipality should submit a proposal for the project ‘Integrated management of plastic waste in island and coastal areas’. By participating in the LIFE programme, we can reap significant benefits for local production and tourism.

The provisional title of the proposed project is LIFE ZEOCOMPOST.
This proposal aims to tackle and manage the problem of organic waste (agricultural waste – branches, leaves, etc.), kitchen waste, waste from olive mills and cheese dairies, and urban waste water). The management of this waste is planned through the creation, pilot production and promotion of an innovative organic waste blend, which will be collected on the islands of Milos, Lemnos and Mytilene. The further reuse of the organic waste mixtures will be achieved through the addition of multifunctional raw materials (e.g. zeolite). These mixtures (waste-raw materials) will be applied on a trial basis to small plots of various crops in order to test the effectiveness of the resulting fertilisers. As part of the proposed project, emphasis will be placed on raising awareness and providing training for the local communities on the participating islands.
The Mayor also pointed out that this initiative is aimed at young farmers involved in vine cultivation and will create new jobs.

The following organisations will be involved in the proposed project: – National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

  • Piraeus University of Applied Sciences
  • Municipality of Lemnos
  • Municipality of Lesbos
  • Aegean Recycling S.A. (headquartered in Lesbos)
  • Sirocco S.A. (commercial/consultancy firm)
  • Proopsis S.A. (Business Consultants)

These three islands were selected on the basis of their geological structure.
The deadline for submitting the proposal is 1 October 2015

In light of the above, the Municipal Council of Milos is invited to approve the submission of the proposal for funding under the LIFE+ programme, as briefly outlined above.

The Municipal Council, having taken the above recommendation into account and following a discussion

UNANIMOUSLY RESOLVES

A. To approve the submission of a proposal for funding under the LIFE+ programme for the project provisionally titled ‘LIFE ZEOCOMPOST’, as briefly described above.
B. Authorises the Mayor, Mr Gerasimos Damoulakis, to take all necessary steps and to sign the proposal for its submission.

The above decision was numbered 171/2015
