Zeolite in Agriculture

Precipitation of tartaric acid in wine and zeolites [French text]

Read more

The necessary utilisation of zeolite – N. Lygeros, G. Chatzigeorgiou

Translated from the Greek by Athena Kehagias The term zeolite was coined in 1756 by Swedish mineralogist Axel Fredrik Cronstedt , who observed that upon the rapid heating of the mineral stilbite, large quantities of steam was produced from water, which are absorbed by the mineral. Based on this fact, he named this mineral zeolite, from the Greek word Zeo (zeō), which means boil and stone. The zeolites are aluminosilicate members of a family of microporous solids known as molecular sieves. This term refers to a particular capacity, namely the ability to selectively sort out molecules based primarily on a ... Read more

Olive mill wastewater treatment using a simple, low-cost zeolite-based method

Olive mill wastewater (OMW), a liquid by-product of the olive oil industry, represents a severe environmental problem owing to its high pollution load. In this study, successive columns containing different types of natural materials were investigated for their OMW treatment efficiency. Passing OMW through three columns of gravel, fine sand, and a mixture of acidified cotton and zeolite (weight:weight ratio of cotton:clinoptilolite of 2:1), followed by treatment with activated charcoal (AC) and lime, was the best treatment in terms of the quality of water obtained. This treatment decreased concentrations of −3NO, B, K, P, and total fat in OMW by ... Read more
