The countdown has begun for the extraction of Thracian zeolite by the Petroton-based company, ‘Lithoxoos’.
The technical study for the operation of the quarry at Petrota, in the municipality of Nea Orestiada in the prefecture of Evros, for the extraction of Greek zeolite has been approved. The approval covers approximately 30 stremmata in the ‘Palioklissi’ area, north-west of the village of Petrota.

Licence granted for the extraction of Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros
Following years of campaigning to promote the use of Greek zeolite, an official licence has been granted to operate the quarry for this industrial mineral, on a public plot of 83.4273 stremmata, at Kokkalo Petrotwn in the municipality of Orestiada, Evros, to Olympus S.A. The decision was taken by the Ministry of Environment and Energy on 20 February 2017 and bears the reference number: ΔΜΕΒΟ-Β/Φ6.11.7/171440/315. Zeolites with an absorbent-catalytic effect on formaldehyde in wood-based materials
More than 85 percent of all wood-based materials are manufactured using adhesives containing formaldehyde. Increasingly strict regulations concerning these emissions have been creating major challenges for adhesive manufacturers and the wood-based product industry since the 1970s. The primary objective of the project was to considerably reduce the formaldehyde emissions from wood-based products by adding small amounts of absorbers on the basis of zeolites with simultaneous catalytic effect.
