Recovery as innovation – N. Lygeros

In a world where everyone talks about development without showing the slightest sign of progress, recovery is presented as an innovation. And this is indeed the case for our country, as very few people believe it is worthwhile. Tangible assets, such as Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone and Greek zeolite, have still not convinced our society that they constitute a recovery strategy for Greece. There is, of course, mental inertia, which is always an obstacle, but misinformation about our strategic reserves certainly does not help, as very few people are aware of the facts. What matters is that, thanks to recent ... Read more

Research into zeolite on the island of Kirk

The Municipality of Alexandroupoli is ready to submit an application for a mining exploration licence in the Kirkis area, where zeolite is believed to be present. The catalyst for this process was the publication of the research by Dr. Kyriakos Arikas, a lecturer at the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrology at the University of Hamburg, in which he states that, apart from the zeolite deposit at Petrota, there are other exploitable deposits such as the one at Kirkis. Yiannis Falekas, specialist adviser on energy and natural resources, discussed the topic of zeolite research with Stavros Apostolidis on the STATUS programme.

The potential of zeolite – N. Lygeros

The potential of zeolite is overcoming more and more obstacles and transforming this strategic mineral into a national issue that resonates with the Greek people. Until recently, zeolite was completely unknown in our country, whilst humanity uses four million tonnes of it every year. Subsequently, its basic properties were unknown, even though it acts as a natural detoxifier on a global scale. Furthermore, no one knew exactly what was happening with Greek zeolite, whilst legal cases were pending due to red tape. Now, however, the Greek people have learnt about its many applications in the hydrocarbon, construction, agriculture and livestock ... Read more

Zeolite against nematodes – N. Lygeros

Whilst everyone knows that the nematode is a scourge on agriculture, few farmers realise that it can be effectively controlled by incorporating zeolite. Conventional chemical control is not only costly but also has serious environmental consequences. Meanwhile, organic methods are not as effective. The problem is particularly acute with the following nematodes: Meloidogyne, Heterodera and Globodera. Many nematodes feed on bacteria, fungi and soil organisms, whilst others are parasitic and feed on animals or plants. Nematodes weaken plants and make them less resistant to other attacks. This can result, for example, in root rot. The problem is exacerbated in greenhouses ... Read more
