Natural zeolites in the water treatment process

Natural zeolites in the water treatment process D. BARLOKOVÁ ABSTRACT In many cases, it is necessary to treat water intended for human consumption in order to meet the requirements set out in Regulation No. 354/2006 of the Government of the Slovak Republic, which defines the requirements for water intended for human consumption and monitors the quality of drinking water. When seeking suitable water treatment technologies, the focus is on developing new, more efficient and cost-effective technologies and materials. The aim of this study was to compare the removal of dissolved iron and manganese from water using the natural zeolite – ... Read more

Clays as dietary supplements for pigs: A review

Mohana Devi Subramaniam and In Ho Kim Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology20156:38 DOI: 10.1186/s40104-015-0037-9 ©  Subramaniam and Kim. 2015 Abstract Clays are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicate molecules composed of alkali and alkaline earth cations along with small amounts of various other elements. The best-known are montmorillonite, smectite, illite, kaolinite, biotite and clinoptilolite. The molecules in these clays are arranged in three-dimensional structures creating internal voids and channels capable of trapping a wide variety of molecules. As a result of this structure, clay minerals are regarded as a simple and effective tool for the prevention of the negative effects of many toxic compounds. Dietary supplementation with clays has been shown ... Read more

Zeolite: “the magic stone”? Mainly nutritional, environmental, experimental and clinical fields of application

Carmen Laurino and Beniamino Palmieri University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Modena (Italy). Abstract Introduction: zeolites (clinoptilolites) are a family of alluminosilicates and cations clustered to form macro aggregates by small individual cavities. In the medical area they are involved in detoxification mechanisms capturing ions and molecules into their holes. Actually, we classify about 140 types of natural and 150 synthetic zeolites, for specific and selective use. Clinoptilolite is a natural zeolite and it is the most widespread compound in the medical market. Objective: this review analyzes the main fields of zeolite utilization. Methods: we searched Pubmed/Medline using the terms ... Read more

Genetic structure and differentiation of natural populations of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae

Agricultural University of Athens, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology Genetics Section, Genetics Laboratory Master’s Thesis: Genetic Structure and Differentiation of Natural Populations of the Olive Fruit Fly, Bactrocera oleae. Postgraduate Programme in ‘Biotechnology and Applications in Agriculture’ Vasiliki Androutsopoulou, Athens, November 2011 Abstract In the present study, natural populations of the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, using the starch gel electrophoresis method, with the aim of detecting polymorphism in four enzymes, encoded by four corresponding genes, which are of particular significance and interest for the genetics, morphology and physiology of the olive fruit fly. The results of the study could prove ... Read more

Germline transformation of the olive fly Bactrocera oleae using a versatile transgenesis marker

Savakis*† *Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Foundation for Research and Technology, Heraklion, Crete, Greece; †Medical School and §Department of Biology, University of Crete, Heraklion, Greece Abstract The olive fruit fly (olive fly) Bactrocera oleae (Dacus), recently introduced in North America, is the most destructive pest of olives worldwide. The lack of an efficient gene transfer technology for olive fly has hampered molecular analysis, as well as development of genetic techniques for its control. We have developed a Minos-based transposon vector carrying a self- ... Read more

Solubility of apatite in clay and zeolite-bearing systems: Application to agriculture

Ward Chesworth, Peter Van Straaten, Peter Smith, Steven Sadura Department of Land Resource Science, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ont. N1G 2W1 Canada Accepted 11 February 1987, Available online 1 April 2003 Abstract The various forms of apatite release Ca+2 and P-bearing anions into solution. The generally low solubility of these phases, however, has been a drawback to the use of apatite as a direct source of nutrient P in agriculture. Apatite has for the most part been used as a raw material for the production of the more soluble phases used in conventional fertilizers. This necessitates industrial processing by such techniques ... Read more

Evaluation of Zeolite Beads Technology for Drying Vegetable Seeds to a Low Moisture Content prior to Long-term Storage in Nepal

Khanal Arjun(1) Paudel Pratima(2) 1 Project Coordinator/Research Associate at Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) (E-mail: arjunkhanal15@gmail.com) 2 Data entry officer at Center for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED) (E-mail: Paudelpratima10@yahoo.com) Abstract Seed drying beads are modified ceramic materials (aluminum silicates or “zeolites”) that specifically absorb and hold water molecules very tightly in their microscopic pores. The beads will continue to absorb water until all of their pores are filled, up to 20 to 25% of their initial weight. Seven experiments were carried out using zeolite seed Drying Beads® to dry ... Medical Applications of Zeolites – Kresimir Pavelic and Mirko Hadzija

Ruder Boskovic  Institute, Zagreb, Croatia I. INTRODUCTION A particular structural feature of zeolites relative to other aluminosilicate materials, and other crystalline materials in general, is the existence of channels and/or cavities linked by channels. One of the characteristics that distinguishes zeolites from other porous materials is their variety of pore sizes and shapes. The size and shape of channels/cavities in zeolites therefore define the structural parameters of a given type of zeolite (1). Properties of zeolites, such as ion exchange, intercrystalline pores that discriminate between molecules of different dimension, strong acidic sites, and active reservoirs for metal-catalyzed reactions, have earned ... Effect of dietary supplementation with natural zeolite and a mycotoxin-adsorbing preparation on the performance and carcass characteristics of meat-producing poultry

Author Klisarchi, Apostolia Evangelou Date of publication: 2009 Faculty/Department: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology Supervisor: Dotas, Dimitrios. Abstract To study the yields and characteristics of the carcasses of meat-producing poultry, to whose diets three (3) levels of natural zeolite or one (1) commercial mycotoxin-adsorbing preparation were added, a comparative feeding trial was conducted with a total of 480 Ross-type broilers, from day-old chicks up to 42 days of age. The birds were reared on the floor in a closed poultry house with a controlled environment. Root bark was used as litter. The prescribed programme for ... Read more

Natural zeolite clinoptilolite: a new immunostimulant in anticancer therapy

Journal of Molecular Medicine abstract Natural silicate materials, including zeolite clinoptilolite, have been shown to exhibit diverse biological activities and have been used successfully as a vaccine adjuvant and for the treatment of diarrhea. We report a novel use of finely ground clinoptilolite as a potential adjuvant in anticancer therapy. Clinoptilolite treatment of mice and dogs suffering from a variety of tumor types led to improvement in the overall health status, prolongation of life-span, and decrease in tumors size. Local application of clinoptilolite to skin cancers of dogs effectively reduced tumor formation and growth. In addition, toxicology studies on mice ... Read more
