On the one hand, the priority is the effective management of environmental risk, with the aim of ... Read more

A study into the potential for preventing subacute dyspeptic acidosis in dairy cows by adding zeolite (clinoptilolite) to their feed

Doctoral Thesis Author Karatzia, Maria-Anastasia H., Supervisor: Roubias, Nikolaos, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Veterinary Medicine, 2010. Subject An experimental study investigated the effect of adding a natural zeolite, clinoptilolite, to the cattle diet on the prevention of subacute dyspeptic acidosis (UDA). Ten healthy Holstein cows, which were in the dry period and not pregnant, were used. Following the creation of a permanent external fistula in the rumen, the animals were fed for 21 days on a diet that met their maintenance requirements (3 kg of alfalfa hay, 3 kg of wheat straw and 2.5 kg of concentrated feed ... Effect of dietary supplementation with natural zeolite on the performance and quality characteristics of eggs from laying hens

Postgraduate Thesis – Author: Efthymiu, Maria Konstantinou; Supervisor: Dotas, Dimitrios, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Agriculture, 2010. The aim of this research project was to investigate the effect of adding natural zeolite to the diet on the productive traits and characteristics of eggs laid by laying hens. The experimental group consisted of 96 Isa Brown laying hens, aged 28 weeks and with an average body weight of 1,870 g at the start of the experiment. The hens were housed in cage batteries in a controlled environment and allocated to four dietary treatments (M, Z1, Z2 and Z3), in accordance with ... Read more

Modified zeolite as a means of purifying irrigation water – Study

PhD Thesis – Author: Dionysiou, Ourania-Nina S., Supervisor: Misopolinos, Nikolaos, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Agriculture, 2010. This study investigated certain conditions that influence the adsorption of B and P on surface-modified natural zeolite (clinoptilolite), with hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide (C19H42BrN or HDTMA–Br), with a view to its use as a decontamination agent for irrigation water and aquatic systems. Specifically, the following were investigated: (a) the effect of washing the zeolite with HCl prior to its modification, and (b) the effect of increasing the pH on the adsorption of B by the zeolite. Subsequently, the following were investigated: c) the effect ... Read more

Mineralogy and adsorption capacity of zeolite from South Xerovouni (Avdella, Evros) and potential environmental applications

Doctoral thesis, Author: Tzamos, Evangelos Ioannis, Supervisor: Filippidis, A., Professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Sciences, Department of Geology. The zeolite-bearing volcanic clastic sediments of Southern Xerovouni (Avdella, Evros Prefecture) contain, on average, 57% by weight of HEU-type zeolite, 6% by weight of smectite, 3% by weight of marmatite (a total of 66% by weight of microporous minerals), 19% by weight of astrios, 10% by weight of cristobalite and 5% by weight of quartz (a total of 34% non-microporous minerals). The chemical composition of these sediments is: 69.9% by weight SiO₂, 13.2% by weight Al₂O₃, 1.2% by weight Fe₂O₃, ... Read more

A study of the effect of zeolite on the absorption of antibodies against Escherichia coli, on the health status and on the productive characteristics of suckling calves, following its addition to colostrum and milk

Doctoral thesis Author Pourliotis, Konstantinos D., Supervisor: Karatzias, Charilaos, Professor, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Veterinary Medicine. Subject The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the effect of adding clinoptilolite to the feed on the absorption of E.coli on the health and performance of suckling calves. A total of 84 newborn Holstein calves were used; these were examined prior to the start of the experiment and found to be healthy. The animals were divided into three equally sized, homogeneous groups (groups A, B and C). Group C served as the control group, whilst groups A and B ... Read more

The effect of natural zeolite on aspects of the ostrich’s reproductive capacity and on the performance of growing birds.

Doctoral thesis. Author: Dedousi, Anna S.P.H. Supervisor: Tserveni-Gousi, Angeliki, Prof. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Geotechnical Sciences, Department of Veterinary Medicine, 2009. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of natural clinoptilolite zeolite on the reproductive characteristics of the ostrich and on the performance of growing birds. To achieve this objective, a total of three consecutive experiments were carried out at two ostrich farms. The aim of the first experiment was to investigate, at farm level, whether the addition of a natural zeolite, clinoptilolite, to the diet of breeding ostriches has any effect on their reproductive ... Increasing the energy efficiency of pig farm effluent by adding zeolite for biogas production in the thermophilic range – PhD thesis

Doctoral Thesis THOMA A. KOTSOPOULOU, Graduate in Agricultural Science, Graduate in Civil Engineering, MSc, IKY Scholarship Holder SUPERVISOR: Prof. Gerasimos Martzopoulos This study investigated the effect of adding different quantities of natural zeolite on the anaerobic degradation of pig farm effluent. In particular, the effect of adding zeolite on increasing the energy yield of the effluent (greater quantity of methane, energy yield over a short period of time) was examined. Furthermore, the impact of introducing zeolite on the reduction of solids, volatile solids and BOD5 (environmental factors) was investigated. Two preliminary measurements were carried out, which served as a guide ... Read more

The application of natural zeolites in animal science and aquaculture – The Application of Natural Zeolites in Animal Science and Aquaculture

The Application of Natural Zeolites in Animal Science and Aquaculture F. A. Mumpton and P. H. Fishman 1,2 Summary As agriculturalists step up their efforts to expand crop and animal production, numerous mineral materials are receiving greater attention as soil amendments and as dietary supplements in animal husbandry. The zeolite group of minerals stands out from the rest, and its exciting array of physical and chemical properties promises to contribute to many areas of agriculture and aquaculture over the next decade. Their abundance and availability have aroused considerable interest in research stations across several countries, although the number of publications ... Read more

Use of natural zeolite as a supplementary cementitious material

Babak Ahmadi *, Mohammad Shekarchi Construction Materials Institute, Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran abstract Natural zeolite, a type of frame-structured hydrated aluminosilicate mineral, is used abundantly as a type of natural pozzolanic material in some regions of the world. In this work, the effectiveness of a locally quarried zeolite in enhancing mechanical and durability properties of concrete is evaluated and is also compared with other pozzolanic admixtures. The experimental tests included three parts: In the first part, the pozzolanic reactivity of natural zeolite and silica fume were examined by a thermogravimetric method. In ... Read more

Biogas Purification Using Natural Zeolite and NaOH

Biogas Purification Using Natural Zeolite and NaOH Abstract Biogas purification is the most important process for improving the quality of biogas. This research introduced a continuous system for purifying biogas from CO₂ impurities using zeolite and a NaOH solution. The granular zeolites were arranged in 1 to 5 layers on a solid purifier. The concentration of the NaOH solution was varied from 10 per cent to 50 per cent. The contact time between the biogas and the zeolite and NaOH solution was monitored at 15-minute intervals. The results showed that the NaOH solution absorbed CO₂ more rapidly than the zeolite. ... Read more
