Use of sewage sludge and zeolite for fertilising fields in Nea Orestiada by the Democritus University of Thrace

Use of sewage sludge and zeolite for fertilising fields in Nea Orestiada by the Democritus University of Thrace The initial findings in the field were positive and offer the potential for better utilisation of urban wastewater The use of sludge from the Orestiada Municipality’s biological treatment plant, which was trialled by the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences at the Democritus Universityin Orestiada. The University has been using the sludge on a trial basis on crops of soft wheat, maize and sunflower crops, and has recently agreed with the municipality to utilise sewage sludge from the Orestiada Municipal Water Supply ... Licence granted for the extraction of Greek zeolite – N. Lygeros

Following years of campaigning to promote the use of Greek zeolite, an official licence has been granted to operate the quarry for this industrial mineral, on a public plot of 83.4273 stremmata, at Kokkalo Petrotwn in the municipality of Orestiada, Evros, to Olympus S.A. The decision was taken by the Ministry of Environment and Energy on 20 February 2017 and bears the reference number: ΔΜΕΒΟ-Β/Φ6.11.7/171440/315. In practical terms, this means that we are moving not only into a new phase for zeolite, but into a whole new cycle. This is because it will be the first time in Greece’s history ... Read more

zeolite: a remedy for misery – N. Lygeros

With the granting of the environmental impact assessment licence, we have moved on to the next stage in the campaign for Greek zeolite. And we are already seeing the practical implications, as another company that had kept its deposit dormant has requested an extension of its licence. This is a positive development and should be conditional upon work commencing in the Thrace region. Thus, the fact that a new licence has been granted has encouraged long-standing players in the sector to activate their own. It is important that there be other investors and specialists, who will collectively form a critical ... Read more

The Passions of Localism – Nikos Lygeros

Greek zeolite is bringing to light more and more issues that border on the absurd. Years ago, we fought to see mining take place in Greece for the first time, particularly in Thrace, so that the region could develop through a resource of national significance. For years, Greek bureaucracy held up this development, with the result that the local residents no longer believed that anything would ever happen. Eventually, we witnessed a shift in focus towards other areas, different from the original ones, but always close to Petrota. These new exploration licences acted as a catalyst and were bolstered by ... Read more

A detailed time-series EMT-type zeolite crystallization study in the model hydrogel system was performed to elucidate the topological and temporal aspects of zeolite nucleation. A comprehensive set of analytical tools and methods was employed to analyze ... Read more

Science breaks new ground in converting coal ash from a pollutant into useful products

South Africa has large coal reserves. It mainly burns coal to produce electricity at 13 existing coal-burning power plants, situated mainly in Mpumalanga, a province in the country’s east. In South Africa, coal power generation results in at least 36 million tonnes of solid waste residue called fly ash being produced annually. That’s the equivalent of six dumps each the size of the Pyramid of Giza. Fly ash is a problem anywhere in the world where coal is burnt, but it is particularly so in South Africa because its low-grade coal has up to 40% inorganic residue that turns into ash on combustion. Fly ash is ... Read more
