Zeolite in the Hydrocarbon Industry

Strategic objective – N. Lygeros

It is now time to move on to the next stage, to stop focusing exclusively on the economy and to invest in strategic thinking. Enough already of this Greek-style culture of misery, where the whole point is how to undermine one another in order to win votes. We are part of Hellenism and must rise above these wretched party differences and disputes. We must devote all our energies to helping both Greece and Cyprus. If we do not have a strategic goal on which we all agree, then we deserve our fate. Read the rest here: Lygeros.org

New Chemical Structures Could Improve Fuel Gases and Carbon Capture

Researchers from Stockholm University developed chemical structures that are uniquely capable of removing carbon dioxide from gas mixtures. The zeolites — or semi-porous solids — rapidly absorbed carbon dioxide from biogas and natural gas, which could eventually increase the value of those fuels and represent a first step toward carbon capture capabilities. Zeolites are currently used in a variety of industrial processes, including generating oxygen from compressed air in airplanes and hospitals. The study, however, said that the newly engineered materials are the most complex zeolite structures ever developed. Scientists also said that the zeolites were created through a combined process ... From words to deeds – N. Lygeros

During the negotiations, we saw plenty of talk but little action. Now we have very few opportunities to take meaningful action. And as it is actions, not gestures, that determine our course, these must be taken with great care to ensure they have a strategic foundation, because we must then support them in practice. We are not now dealing with party statements, proposals or counter-proposals, but with national decisions being taken against a backdrop of retrenchment. These actions are therefore decisive. Consequently, we must not view them as proof that a crisis has ended, but as the beginning of a ... Read more

US and Dutch researchers identify chemical transformations in zeolites

US and Netherlands researchers identify chemical transformations in zeolites Researchers from the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), UOP and Netherlands-based Utrecht University have found a way to understand chemical transformations occurring within zeolites. Zeolites are crystalline solid structures made up of aluminium, silicon, and oxygen atoms, and are used to convert oil to gasoline. They are also used as catalysts to process petroleum and chemicals. The new technique allows the identification of the spots where chemical reactions occur ,and how these spots shut down. These spots are said to facilitate molecules rip apart and rearrange as they ... Read more

Biogas Purification Using Natural Zeolite and NaOH

Biogas Purification Using Natural Zeolite and NaOH Abstract Biogas purification is the most important process for improving the quality of biogas. This research introduced a continuous system for purifying biogas from CO₂ impurities using zeolite and a NaOH solution. The granular zeolites were arranged in 1 to 5 layers on a solid purifier. The concentration of the NaOH solution was varied from 10 per cent to 50 per cent. The contact time between the biogas and the zeolite and NaOH solution was monitored at 15-minute intervals. The results showed that the NaOH solution absorbed CO₂ more rapidly than the zeolite. ... Read more

Inertia and inaction – N. Lygeros

Inertia and inaction – N. Lygeros. At the moment, we are witnessing a great deal of inaction and inactivity, as if everyone were in a state of limbo. Many have not yet realised what has happened, what is happening and what will happen. Some expect nothing at all any more, whilst others expect everything. The question is: why should we wait? When has waiting ever done our country any good? Quite simply: never! It is therefore important that we break out of this inertia and inaction, not merely to claim that we are taking steps, but to create a framework ... Read more

Zeolites may fuel efficient hydrocarbon refining processes – “Predicted” zeolites may fuel efficient processes

“Predicted” zeolites may fuel efficient processes | Zeolite.gr Scientists at Rice Univ. and the Univ. of Minnesota have identified synthetic materials that may purify ethanol more efficiently and greatly improve the separation of long-chain hydrocarbons in petroleum refining. The results show that predictive modeling of synthetic zeolites, a technique pioneered by Rice bioengineer Michael Deem, is highly effective and can help solve some of the most challenging problems facing industries that require efficient ways to separate or catalyze materials. Deem is co-author of a new study led by Univ. of Minnesota chemist Ilja Siepmann that appeared in Nature Communications. Zeolites ... Read more

When everyone is preoccupied with trivial matters – Nikos Lygeros

When everyone is preoccupied with trivial matters, they are under the impression that they are actually doing something. Simply because they agree with one another, and that satisfies their sense of self. Some want their position, whilst others want to hold on to it. In fact, they speak earnestly about themselves and are held in high regard, as if they were nothing before, as if they didn’t even exist. And they want us to believe that they are genuinely concerned with our issues. Yet our issues are simple and do not concern any government, but only our homeland. For some ... Read more

When you create something – Nikos Lygeros

When you produce work, you do not fear criticism, because you know your own worth and carry on undeterred. For your role is clear if you love your people and your homeland. And if you have set yourself the goal of securing the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone for them, it doesn’t matter where you are, as you know what you must do. And every obstacle is a way to overcome your personal problems and devote yourself to the national issues that concern you in practice because of your Hellenism. So, if you’re already involved in issues such as the Greek ... Read more
