Greek zeolites and government departments – N. Lygeros

The growth that Greek zeolite has the potential to bring to Thrace, and indeed to Greece as a whole, is significant and must be recognised by the government departments responsible for assessing the validity of the entire process. Of course, we are not talking solely about the 8 per cent that constitutes the Greek state’s revenue from each quarry, since zeolite, as a rock, falls into this category. But more generally, both domestically and abroad. Because, at present, zeolites are imported. Thus, the extraction of Greek zeolite will initially lead to cost savings and subsequently foster an outward-looking approach, bringing benefits to our country. Furthermore, the workforce in Thrace and Macedonia will consist of Greek families in need of employment, particularly at this time. The applications of zeolite in agriculture and livestock farming will transform not only the landscape of rural development but also the environment. Both the relevant ministries must therefore bolster efforts to promote Greek zeolite, so that we can make the most of these strategic reserves in Thrace and, of course, begin surveys in other areas of Northern Evros to create a strategic mix for our country.
