The countdown has begun for the extraction of Thracian zeolite by the Petroton-based company, ‘Lithoxoos’.
The technical feasibility study for the operation of the quarry at Petrota, in the municipality of Nea Orestiada in the prefecture of Evros, for the extraction of Greek zeolite has been approved. The approval covers approximately 30 stremmata in the ‘Palioklissi’ area, north-west of the village of Petrota.

The approval of the technical study for this specific area follows the approval of the environmental conditions issued approximately one year ago and paves the way for the extraction and processing of zeolite by the company owned by residents of the Petroto area.
The company ‘Lithoxoos’ was founded on the initiative of the village’s residents, both those living there permanently and those who have migrated within Greece and abroad, mainly to Germany, who, realising the importance of the deposit, wished to exploit it at the site of extraction and prevent its transport and processing away from their homeland, with a vision of the economic, social and cultural revitalisation of their village and the wider region.
