The floods in Evros and zeolite – N. Lygeros
The floods in Evros, with all the problems they have caused for farmers, do have one positive aspect: they have raised awareness even amongst our most indifferent citizens and the most incompetent politicians. Now everyone is complaining about the river and all the substances it carries downstream, which destroy the fields, not just the crops. The point is that no one is proposing a specific solution to the problems that arise. Because, in fact, there is a solution, and more specifically in Evros. Zeolite helps to manage moisture, which is very important in such cases, where restoration is also required. As a molecular sieve, zeolite enables filtration and binds heavy metals, toxins and free radicals. Therefore, zeolite can be used to filter the fields directly. Furthermore, zeolite is found in abundance in Thrace and particularly in Northern Evros. Consequently, rather than everyone simply looking at one another, consoling one another or blaming one another, they could act together to promote the use of Greek zeolite, so that we, as Greece, can subsidise our farmers to save our land. This proposal is neither inconceivable nor utopian; it is simply a matter of will, so it could be implemented immediately to create a dynamic context for regeneration, without further delay, since the solution is what matters and it already exists. Whereas everything else is merely rhetoric designed to mask the lack of political will. Quite simply, it is absurd that whilst the Greek army is using zeolite to dry out the roads, politicians are unaware of this and are therefore unable to help the farmers. Thrace is a resource that should simply be utilised if we want it to endure; otherwise, we will leave it to a political establishment incapable of changing the situation through action, because it lacks a vision due to a lack of strategic thinking.
