The innovative use of zeolite – N. Lygeros

Whilst some of us wonder whether we can change reality through innovation, we now have a tangible example in Giorgos Georgiadis and his company, OLYMPOS S.A. For not only did the two of them believe in a vision for the Greece of the future, but they also took the risk of putting that discovery into practice. And that is where the difference lies. It is one thing to believe, and quite another to remain faithful to the vision of zeolite. The choice of the Kokkalos area, next to Petrota, was made without the traditional geological indicators that simplify exploration. Thus, from the outset, there was a possibility of failure; yet, thanks to the perseverance and expertise of Giorgos Georgiadis, the feat was achieved, and now we are talking about the reality of Greek zeolite. The initial results will be cross-checked and certified so that we can speak scientifically about the quality of the product. More specifically, we will have data from XRD, XRF and ICP-MS measurements. In this way, we will know, both quantitatively and qualitatively, which parts of the deposit make the difference and enable Greece to capitalise on the product’s added value. We will also have the opportunity to apply Greek zeolites in agriculture and livestock farming, promoting them as soil improvers as well as natural detoxifiers. Thus, we are witnessing the first steps of Greek zeolite, which most people could not even have imagined. We therefore have an example of research and development for Greece that can be built on people who think innovatively, because they want to write a story that respects both people and the environment.
