Zeolite in the refuse collection lorries of the Municipality of Neapolis-Sykies
A pilot scheme in the municipality of Neapolis-Sykies to clean and ‘sanitise’ refuse collection lorries and the worksite, involving frequent disinfection and deodorisation using mineral zeolite and aromatic liquids.
The initiative began at the Cleaning Department’s depot, where specialised teams were ‘standing by’ for the council’s refuse collection lorries to take up their positions under the shelters following the day’s refuse collection rounds. These are teams from a company that has undertaken a pilot project to demonstrate the powerful capabilities of modern disinfectant and deodorising materials, which will be repeated twice a week, using specialised disinfectant liquids and deodorisers, such as natural zeolite, all of which are eco-friendly and safe for both the environment and people.
The first treatment took place on Tuesday 11 August 2020, in the presence of the mayor of Neapolis-Sykies, Simos Daniilidis, who was briefed by the company’s representative on the use of the materials and their effectiveness.

‘The foremost responsibility of our municipal administration is the consistent and ongoing protection of public health, with a focus on the cleaning and waste management network. And our efforts in this direction are intensified even further during the summer months, particularly at this critical stage of the coronavirus pandemic. We therefore have no choice but to constantly seek new ways to eliminate sources of pollution and to make use of every suitable modern scientific tool. This is precisely what we are doing now with the comprehensive disinfection and deodorisation of refuse collection lorries and the construction site, with the aim of establishing this as a standard practice, with a view to protecting workers, residents living near the site and public health in general,” says Mayor Simos Daniilidis.

Use of natural zeolite
It should be noted that in the municipality of Neapolis-Sykies, a wide-ranging programme to clean rubbish bins is currently underway, the inclusion of which in the comprehensive disinfection and deodorisation programme is currently under review and study.
According to the protocol, the first step is to clean the body of the refuse collection lorry, followed by washing and then disinfection using two different specialised disinfectant liquids, after which natural zeolite is applied. This is a porous mineral with a high binding capacity that acts as a deodorising filter, trapping various gaseous substances and ‘binding’ bacteria, fungi, gases, inorganic, organic and organometallic compounds.

The process is completed using scented liquids; in this case, the scent of lavender and lilac was chosen.
And the first impression one gets upon approaching the refuse collection lorry once the process is complete is the absence of unpleasant odours. “With frequent and regular interventions twice a week, we will reach a point where the bins are clean and safe for everyone, just as this can also be achieved with rubbish bins,”, notes Mayor Simos Daniilidis.
