A visit to the quarry and factory of the Greek zeolite from Thrace, owned by the company AVGI, in Komotini.
Last week, our team visited the quarry of the company AVGI Ltd, where the extraction of Greek zeolite from Thrace has begun.
AVGI Ltd received the go-ahead for the extraction process from the Directorate of Environment and Spatial Planning for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, on 17 December 2019, following the approval of the quarry’s technical study.
The quarry is situated in the mountainous region of Rodopi, at the ‘Skaloma’ site in the Municipality of Arriana, and covers an area of 98 stremmata.
Zeolite extraction is carried out on the surface; it is environmentally friendly and requires only digging tools, as zeolite is a soft rock compared to other aggregates used in agriculture and construction.
The mineralogical analysis carried out at the National Technical University of Athens on 23 May 2018 states that, in all the samples analysed, the main mineral was HEU-type zeolite (heulandite type II), which is an intermediate member of the isomorphic mixture of heulandite and clinoptilolite.
Our team then visited the company’s factory, where the zeolite processing plant is located. The company has set up a production facility, comprising a series of grinders and screens, capable of producing all the sizes required by the market.
The processing of zeolite is simple; it only needs to be crushed into smaller particle sizes, depending on its intended use, which is why it is also a cost-effective material.
